Supporting authors while embracing a changing publishing landscape

In a world where publishing has never been easier, the real challenge is creating a book that truly stands out.

For over 15 years, we at Design for Writers — and later our editing arm, Pretty & Precise — have been at the heart of independent publishing.

We’ve worked with hundreds of authors, helping them to publish thousands of books and make millions of sales. The real heroes are our authors, of course, but our professional design, editing, writing and production services have helped them to achieve their goals.

Because in every case we shared a common goal: to do the job well.

Our business is built on a passion for books, a love of writing, an eye for design, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work and memorable service.

But the publishing landscape has changed dramatically over the years. Self-publishing is no longer the underdog — it’s become a viable and professional alternative to traditional publishing. At the same time, ultra-low-cost options are flooding the market, prioritising affordability over quality.

That’s why we’re evolving.

Principal Publishing is the next step in our journey: a brand built to meet the needs of authors and professionals who value high-quality, professional publishing services. We’re not leaving behind what we’ve done before — we’re growing, adapting, and offering even more to our clients in a changing industry.

Here’s why…

Why the publishing landscape demands change

The rise of self-publishing has transformed the way authors share their work. Platforms like Amazon KDP and IngramSpark have made it easier than ever to publish a book, breaking down traditional barriers and giving authors full control over their projects. Today, it’s possible for an independent author to produce a book that rivals those from major publishers in both quality and reach.

It’s also easier than ever to get it wrong, as the market is flooded with low-cost services that prioritise speed and impossibly low prices over professionalism and service. Authors are often encouraged to produce books quickly and cheaply, resulting in products that fail to make the impact they deserve, ad fail to serve the readers they seek.

Something has to give. Our work means too much to us, and the relationships we build with our authors means too much to us.

At Principal Publishing, we refuse to join the race to the bottom.

We believe every book should be a reflection of the author’s expertise, voice, and vision — whether it’s a self-published debut or a high-end business book for an executive leader.

For those who can’t afford to engage with us, we still want to help. That’s why we’re working behind the scenes on courses, resources, and a community — so that everyone can have access to reliable information that enables them to do as much for themselves as they can, when budgets are tight.

Professional service for those with the budget. First-class resources for those without. So that whether you need your book done for you, need someone alongside you to point you in the right direction, or want to do the whole thing yourself, our vision is to provide what you need.

Balancing continuity with innovation

One of the most important things for us during this transition is maintaining the trust and support of our existing clients. Design for Writers and Pretty & Precise were built to offer a la carte services — design, editing, layout — for authors who needed specific support.

These services aren’t going away.

We’re committed to catering for independent authors who need these essential services. At the same time, we’re expanding our offerings to include new, exciting opportunities:

  • VIP publishing services: Tailored for professionals and executives who want an end-to-end publishing experience. From ideation through writing to publication, we manage every detail, ensuring a seamless process.
  • Educational resources: Courses, guides, and coaching designed to help authors navigate the complexities of self-publishing and create high-quality, impactful books.

This dual focus ensures we can serve the author looking for specific services and the busy professional seeking a comprehensive publishing and production process.

What makes Principal Publishing different?

Here’s what sets us apart:

A dual focus on bespoke services and education

We’ve always been about quality, but now we’re expanding that commitment to include education. Whether you want a full VIP publishing experience or the tools to self-publish with confidence, we’re here to support you.

Quality-driven services

Our focus is on creating books that meet the highest industry standards. From design and editing to production and marketing, we’ll handle every detail with care and professionalism.

Tailored to your goals

Every author is different, and so is every book. We work closely with our clients to ensure their books reflect their unique voice and vision, whether it’s a business book designed to establish authority or a novel meant to captivate readers.

Timelines and the road ahead

This transition to Principal Publishing is a gradual one. Over the next several months, Design for Writers and Pretty & Precise will integrate into the new brand. Our existing services will of course remain available to current and new clients, ensuring continuity and consistency.

Here’s how we’re rolling out the changes:

  1. Maintaining a la carte services: For authors who prefer individual services like editing or design, we’ll continue to offer these options throughout the transition.
  2. VIP services: Our end-to-end publishing packages have been available on an invite-only basis while we refined the service. Soon we’ll be opening them up to all, offering executives and professionals a seamless way to create industry-defining books.
  3. Educational resources: We’re developing courses and guides to help authors learn how to self-publish professionally. These resources will be released in phases, giving authors the tools they need to succeed.
  4. An Author Community: Where we’ll meet regularly over video to discuss shared challenges, create accountability partners, and share best practices.

Navigating the changing landscape with quality and professionalism

As the publishing world evolves, our commitment remains the same: to deliver exceptional quality and support. Principal Publishing positions itself as a partner for authors and professionals who value books that stand out.

So whether you’re an experienced author seeking editing and design support, a professional ready for a VIP publishing experience, or a new writer eager to learn the ropes, Principal Publishing has something for you.

We’re excited about this new chapter, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. If you’re ready to take the next step in your publishing journey, let’s talk. Together, we can create something extraordinary.
